About This Project

Poppy says: “it’s a beautiful piece of mechanical magic.  I remember seeing it as a child and falling in love with it.  I’ve remembered it ever since.”

A Polyphon is a mechanical, disc-playing music box.  They were invented in 1870 in Leipzig and exported around the world. Sadly we know little more about our particular Polyphon but we know that for many of our visitors, like Poppy, it’s a special and memorable part of the collection.

We are delighted that following a service in Southampton, our Polyphon has returned to the gallery in full working order for 2020! Full details about how to experience it for yourself will be coming soon – stay tuned!
