A Birkenhead institution remembered

a sepia toned photograph of several horse-and-carriages in front of a building, the front of which reads "Argyle Theatre" The Argyle Theatre of Varieties opened in 1868 on the edge of the then developing town of Birkenhead. Owned and managed by three generations of one family, it entertained thousands of people over 72 years. The theatre became known nationally and internationally as ‘The Cradle of the Stars’ launching the careers of artistes who were to become household names.

Come and see original playbills and memorabilia from public and private collections, and follow the fascinating story of the theatre and its people in “Twice Nightly, the Argyle Theatre Remembered”.

The exhibition opens Wednesday 8^th June and runs until Saturday 3rd September and is free entry. “Twice Nightly: The Argyle Theatre Remembered” is made possible thanks to the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Exhibition Talks, Tours & Performances

New Date Added: Cathy Warren will now be leading one final “Twice Nightly” exhibition tour at 11am on Friday September 2nd – reserve your place via Eventbrite.

On Wednesday 10th August from 2pm, drop in to the exhibition to hear Paul (Formby) Robinson perform songs of George Formby, plus various Music-Hall songs on the banjolele. Paul has been a member of the George Formby Society since the early 90’s and chair of the Maghull Folk Club since 2011.
