Non-Representational
A key distinction of ‘abstract’ art is that it’s completely freed from the requirement to represent anything physical at all. Instead, the artist is free to use pictorial elements such as colour, form and texture in any way they choose.
‘Inscape Composition, Meditation VII’ by Roy Turner Durrant is an example of such a work in which traditional representation has not been a concern. The shapes bear little relation to any object or scene we can recognise from life. Shapes and colours are unified simply by their interactions on the surface. The title further implies that Durrant did not intend this painting to represent any physical object, but relate to repesenting a state of mind (“Inscape” means the unique inner nature of a person or object as shown in a work of art), for which he has felt that abstraction would be the best method of artistic interpretation.
