Towards Abstraction: In Four Paintings

Abstraction: “to separate or withdraw something from something else” (Tate)

The artworks included in Towards Abstraction all withdraw from the idea that art must reproduce recognisable features of the world to be successful. This follows a trend which has been developed in European art since the mid-to-late 19th century.

On this page we look more closely at four paintings from the show which summarise tendencies in the wider movement of abstract art.
